The Problem With Most Body Moisturisers Sold in India

Walk into any pharmacy or scroll through any beauty platform in India and you will find dozens of body moisturisers claiming to be “clinically tested.” The phrase is everywhere. It appears on budget lotions and premium creams alike, often without any indication of what was actually tested, on whom, and in what conditions.

This matters more than it might seem. Indian skin sits across Fitzpatrick types III–VI — meaning it is rich in melanin, resilient to UV damage, but deeply prone to hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory darkening (PIH), and uneven skin tone. Add to that the reality of India’s climate — intense sun, humidity, pollution, heat — and you have skin that faces a very specific set of challenges. A moisturiser formulated and tested for dry, cold European winters is not going to perform the same way on skin that sweats through a Mumbai monsoon or endures a Delhi summer.

Most body lotions — even the popular ones in Indian pharmacies and supermarkets — are formulated for Western skin in cold, dry climates. They address dryness, not tan. They soften, but don’t brighten. They moisturise, but don’t exfoliate. Indian skin needs more.

So when a label says “clinically tested,” what should you actually be looking for? There are four areas worth examining closely: the testing methodology, the active ingredient profile, the formulation texture, and how the product handles the specific concerns that come with melanin-rich skin in a tropical climate.

What “Clinically Tested” Should Actually Mean

The term itself carries no legal definition in India’s cosmetics regulatory framework. A brand can print it on packaging after running a basic patch test on ten people. That is technically a clinical test. It tells you almost nothing about whether the product will actually hydrate your skin for hours, repair your barrier, or reduce dryness over time.

The standard worth looking for is one that uses transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement as a primary efficacy marker. The TEWL test is a laboratory method used to evaluate the integrity and performance of the skin barrier. It measures the rate at which water naturally evaporates from the skin surface, offering an accurate indication of skin barrier health and hydration efficiency. This test is essential for assessing the effects of cosmetic products such as creams, serums, cleansers, and barrier repair formulations.

Healthy skin scores a low TEWL value, as it means less water loss. Most moisturisers are put to the test using TEWL values. A good moisturiser should help decrease TEWL. Brands that publish TEWL data — even in summary form — are demonstrating that they measured something real and objective, not just asking participants whether their skin felt softer.

Beyond TEWL, credible clinical testing for a body moisturiser should include corneometry (a measure of actual stratum corneum hydration levels), dermatologist grading of visible skin condition before and after, and ideally a study duration of at least four weeks. Independent, multi-protocol clinical testing includes dermatologist grading, hi-tech imaging, and instrumentation — confirming statistically significant results in separate groups. When a brand’s clinical claims are backed by this kind of methodology, the label means something. When it is not, it is marketing language.

One more thing to check: was the testing done on Indian participants, in Indian climate conditions? In the Indian context, artificial ventilation systems such as air conditioning reduce ambient humidity and contribute to dehydration of the skin. A product tested exclusively in a controlled lab in a temperate country has not been validated for the humidity swings, pollution load, and seasonal extremes that Indian skin actually deals with.

The Ingredient Profile That Works for Indian Skin

Once you have a reasonable degree of confidence in the testing methodology, the next question is what is actually inside the formula. The ingredient list tells you more than any claim on the front of the pack.

Ceramides are the non-negotiable starting point. Ceramide-based formulas at a minimum 2% concentration are the number one dermatologist recommendation for barrier repair. The skin barrier is essentially a lipid matrix — ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids — and when that matrix is compromised, water escapes and irritants get in. For Indian skin specifically, the anti-inflammatory function matters because Indian skin is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation, persistent tanning, and uneven skin tone when exposed to the sun without proper protection. Acne scars, inflammation, or insect bites can leave behind dark marks that often linger longer and appear more prominently compared to lighter skin tones. A moisturiser with niacinamide addresses hydration and pigmentation in a single step.

For body skin specifically — elbows, knees, shins — you also want an emollient component. Shea butter, squalane, or fatty acid-rich plant oils help fill in the rough texture that ceramides and humectants alone may not fully address. These ingredients sit in the “occlusive” category, slowing water evaporation after the humectants have drawn moisture in. The combination of humectant + emollient + occlusive is the standard three-layer approach to effective moisturisation, and any credible body cream should cover at least two of these three functions well.

What to avoid is equally important. High-pH formulas — old-school soaps register at pH 9–10, far above skin’s natural 4.5–5.5 — disrupt the microbiome. The same principle applies to body moisturisers: a formula with a pH far outside the skin’s natural range can undermine the very barrier it claims to support. Synthetic fragrance as the primary or only scent ingredient tends to be a source of irritation for sensitive skin types, and Indian skin in particular often reacts strongly to harsh ingredients, making gentle yet effective formulations essential.

Texture and Formulation: Getting It Right for the Indian Climate

Ingredient quality only gets you so far. The way those ingredients are delivered — the formulation texture — determines whether a body moisturiser actually gets used every day or ends up sitting on a shelf.

India’s climate is not one thing. From Mumbai’s humidity to Rajasthan’s dry heat, Indian skin faces distinct challenges that demand tailored skincare. A thick, occlusive cream that works beautifully in a Delhi winter will feel suffocating in Chennai in June. Humid Indian skin needs hydration without occlusion. Traditional heavy creams that work beautifully in dry climates become pore-clogging nightmares when the air is already thick with moisture.

Gel-based moisturisers outperform creams in coastal and humid Indian cities like Mumbai and Chennai. For the body, this translates to lighter lotion or gel-cream textures in the warmer and more humid months, with a richer cream format reserved for winter months or for particularly dry areas like the lower legs, elbows, and heels. You may need to adjust your moisturiser seasonally — lighter formulations during humid months and richer ones during winter.

Absorption speed matters for body care more than it does for face care, simply because the surface area is so much larger. A moisturiser that takes ten minutes to sink in will not become a daily habit. Look for formulas that absorb within two to three minutes on the body without leaving a greasy film — this is partly a texture question and partly about the ratio of humectants to occlusives in the formula.
